***APPLICATION DEADLINE April 1st 2018*** The Spain: Summer Intensive Spanish Program has run every summer for over a decade.The program is based at the Universidad de Malaga in Malaga, Spain, a beautiful and historic beach-lined city of 600,000 on the country's famous Costa del Sol. The program is designed to provide students with an opportunity to totally immerse themselves into the Spanish language and culture. Although the curriculum is rigorous, there is ample opportunity for students to explore the Mediterranean city and local beaches, as well as the major cities of Andalucia including Sevilla, Granada and Cordoba. The program is more independent by design and is not led by an SU faculty member. Students study with Spanish faculty members approved by SU and have great flexibility in choosing the length and content of their program. CLASS: Courses are held at the Universidad de Malaga's Centro Internacional de Espanol, which is located in the picturesque beach-front neighborhood of El Palo, just outside of downtown Malaga. Students can earn from 4-16 credits over the summer depending on how long they study. Each session starts on the first of the month Four Weeks (June, July or August) - 4 credits Eight Weeks (June/July or July/August) - 8 credits Ten Weeks -12 credits Twelve Weeks - 16 credits Students can earn credits at all levels of Spanish from 101 through the advanced level for the intensive language courses -- SPAN 101, SPAN 102, SPAN 201, SPAN 202, SPAN 300 (4-8 cr), SPAN 309, SPAN 310, SPAN 312, SPAN 400. SUMMER DATES: http://www.uma.es/centrointernacionaldeespanol/info/100355/curso-de-verano-2017/ EXCURSIONS: The city of Malaga serves as an ideal launching point for exploration of all of Al-Andaluz including the likes of Granada's Alhambra, Cordoba's Mezquita, and Sevilla's Catedral and Reales Alcazares, as well as other sites of interest. Program participants also visit sites in Malaga, such as the Catedral and Alcazaba. Students also have ample free time to explore Malaga and its surroundings the caves of Nerja, the beaches of Torremolinos and Marbella, the mountain town of Mijas, the old plaza de toros of Ronda, even the Rock of Gibraltar. HOUSING: Students are housed with Spanish host families, most of which are situated within a 10-minute walk of the Mediterranean in the beachfront neighborhood of El Palo, located about 20 minutes outside the city center. The homestays also include full board, which consists of breakfast and a full dinner in mid-afternoon. COST: The estimated cost worksheet for summer 2017 is based on one month-long module earning 4 credits. Final costs will be determined in spring 2017. Students who stay longer and complete more credits pay according to the length of stay and number of credits they earn. SU bills for the cost of all tuition at SU and the University of Malaga as well as housing and board, airport transfers in Malaga, Spain and international health insurance. The estimated cost worksheet provides a good estimate of additional costs including international airfare, and travel within Spain. Application is competitive and program enrollment is limited to 15 participants. Students will be admitted on a rolling basis until the program is full.
