The Belize-Cross-Cultural Perspectives on Health program is based in Belize City, Belize. This short term program offers students the opportunity to experience health education from a cross-cultural perspective in Belize; a developing country in Central America. In partnership with Peacework, the Caribbean Centre of Excellence for Teacher Training (C-CETT) and the Ministry of Education-Belize, students will examine cultural practices, social and political structures, health behavior, and issues of health disparities in Belize. Students will experience global health education firsthand by facilitating health education modules and coordinating an after school health and wellness camp for underprivileged elementary school aged children in Belize City, Belize. The program is open to students from all majors!! There are no academic pre-requisites for enrollment. All that is needed is an interest in issues of the global dimension of public health. The tentative dates for Belize: Cross-Cultural Perspectives in Health for winter term 2017 are January 7 through January 17, 2017.

CLASS:

HLTH 490: International Studies in Community Health. The course will include lectures, discussions, student presentations, journaling, excursions, and guided tours. Through the course, students will develop a familiarity with the history and culture of Belize, broaden and enrich their understanding of international health disparities, explore the concept of behavior change in health education, and develop health education content knowledge. Prior to departure, students are expected to attend three (3) classes to prepare for the international experience.

EXCURSIONS:In Belize, students should expect to take buses, water taxies, and chartered vans to our many destinations. Students can anticipate travels to major historical, cultural and natural sites in Belize, including the ancient Mayan Ruins at Altun Ha, a visit to the National Institute of Culture and History (Museum), a guided tour through the Rainforest at Jaguar Paw, trips to several local vendors and flea markets (featuring local wood carvings, unique handmade jewelry and stone work), and visits to cultural festivals (including Garifuna drumming). In addition, students will enjoy multiple restaurants featuring Caribbean cuisine (North American food available), 3-night stay on the beautiful island of Caye Caulker where students will have the opportunity to snorkel on the Barrier Reef, swim with Stingrays, and enjoy beach time on the white sands. Students will also have free time to explore Belize City, Caye Caulker and other locations.

HOUSING:During the time in Belize City, students and faculty will be housed at the historic Hotel Mopan. Students should expect double and triple occupancy rooms or suites. On Caye Caulker, students will stay at the Rainbow Hotel with similar accommodations. Students should not expect luxurious accommodations; however, all basic amenities will be provided. The majority of meals are included in the program fee.

COST:The cost of the Salisbury Abroad: Belize program is estimated to be $3,600. Costs include SU tuition and fees for 3 credits, airfare, lodging, food, transportation, and some excursions within Belize.

APPLICATION:

Applicants must be in good academic standing. Preference will be given to individuals who demonstrate a passion for service learning, global health, family science, and education. Students from all majors are encouraged to apply. There are no academic pre-requisites. If necessary, preference in admission is given to Health majors and minors.
