Program Description

****APPLICATION DEADLINE: MARCH 15, 2018****

The Salisbury Global Seminar: Belize – STEM Education provides students with the opportunity to explore strategies for teaching science, technology, engineering and mathematics in a school for lower income students in Belize City, Belize. Students will engage with classes at St. Mary’s School in the capital city of this small Central American nation over two weeks teaching daily hands-on lessons integrating engineering, problem solving, and technology concepts.. Students will use specially designed pedagogical robots to teach to elementary students to engineer real world solutions through invention”. Dates for the Belize – STEM Education global seminar are May 26 – June 9, 2018.

CLASS:

ELED 390: STEM Learning for Elementary Students (3 hours credit)

Emphasizes the role of technology for teaching and learning in 1-6 classrooms. Provides experiences with STEM/STEAM learning. Engages young learners in various challenges to encourage invention. Learners create, play, remix, and share with classmates.
Prerequisites: Current student at Salisbury University or permission from the instructor.

EXCURSIONS:In addition to their daily work in St. Mary's School students can anticipate enriching cultural excursions that help them to understand the context for the teaching and learning they will share. Students can expect excursions throughout Belize city as well as side excursions to major historical, cultural and natural sites in Belize. Students will enjoy multiple restaurants featuring Caribbean cuisine (North American food available). Students will also have free time to explore Belize City, Caye Caulker and other locations.

HOUSING:During the time in Belize City, students and faculty will be housed at a three star tourist hotel. Students should expect double and triple occupancy. Students should not expect luxurious accommodations; however, all basic amenities will be provided. The majority of meals are included in the program fee.

COST:The cost of the Salisbury Abroad: Belize program is estimated to be $3,800. Costs include SU tuition and fees for 3 credits, lodging, food, transportation, and some excursions within Belize. International airfare is not included.

APPLICATION:

Applicants must be in good academic standing. Preference will be given to individuals who demonstrate a passion for service learning and education. Students from all majors are encouraged to apply. There are no academic prerequisites. If necessary, preference in admission is given to Education majors.

To apply students must submit the following online:

-An unofficial SU transcript demonstrating a minimum GPA of 2.5
-A brief essay (minimum 300 words)
-Students are required to meet with the program director prior to admissions into the program.

Admission is limited. Students will be admitted on a rolling basis until the program is full.
