Program Description

- - PROGRAM FULL FOR WINTER 2017 - -

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
The January 2017 nursing elective course (NURS 415 – 901) is Cultural Considerations in Health and Wellness. This course is designed to increase the cultural sensitivity of nurses by introducing them to health and health promotion practices in Ecuador. Students will spend 2 weeks in Cuenca, A colonial Spanish city of 400,000 people nestled high in the Andes mountains and enjoying spring-like temperatures year round. During this experience students will study basic medical Spanish, visit an Incan garden and a local market that sells medicinal plants, attend presentations by a curandero, travel to Saraguro, and visit a local hospital, hospice and an orphanage. Through a partnership with the CEDEI School the nursing students will assess learning needs then plan and deliver a class on a relevant health promotion topic. Cultural sensitivity is also enhanced by a home stay with an Ecuadorian family.

CLASS:
Students will earn 3 credits for NURS 415: Special Topics in Nursing. The course will include basic medical Spanish study, written and oral reflections based on field experiences throughout Ecuador including visits with a Shaman, presentations on medicinal plants, a brief stay with an Ecuadorian host family, a service project and other cultural experiences. Students will work in small teams to conduct a needs assessment, plan and present a lesson on a relevant health promotion topic at a bilingual Ecuadorian elementary school. Prerequisite: Permission of Instructor. The program is designed for Nursing students, who will receive first priority in admission. Non-Nursing students are encouraged to apply also to the program director and may be admitted based on an interview with the faculty director and available space.

HOST INSTITUTION:
Founded in 1992, in recognition of the 500th anniversary of the meeting of the Old and New Worlds, the Centers for Interamerican Studies (CEDEI) is a not-for-profit institution of higher learning, dedicated to the study of American languages and cultures. It is accredited by the Ministry of Education of Ecuador and co-sponsors programs with several colleges and universities in the United States.

EXCURSIONS:
The Cultural Considerations Ecuador program will begin with an overnight stay in Ecuador's largest city, Guayaquil. Students will then wind their way by bus through the magnificent Andes on their way to the Valley of Paute where they will spend two days and one night in prepatory orientation and exploration. Once in Cuenca students will make two weekend field trips including an overnight visit to the native American tribal community of Saraguro, where students will learn about native spirituality and wellness, and El Cajas national park, a breathtaking natural landscape at over 10,000 feet above sea level, dotted with lakes that provide clean water supply to the Cuencan valley.

HOUSING:
During the program students will stay in hotels during the first few nights and last few nights. In between, they will be hosted by Ecuadorian families. This group of families has been housing SU students during Jan term since 1995. Most of the families have a member who speaks some English. Living with a host family provides Nursing students with a rich cultural experience, as well as providing an inside perspective on basic health and wellness in the context of professional middle and upper class Ecuadorian urban families.

COST:
Tuition and fees for the 2017 Cultural Considerations: Ecuador program are estimated to be $3600. A final cost will be determined in fall 2016. The price will include all tuition, round-trip airfare, room and board in Cuenca, in-country travel and lodging during the lengthy excursions, and extensive travel assistance provided by the Centro de Estudios Interamericanos.

APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS:
The program is designed for Nursing students, who will receive first priority in admission. Non-Nursing students are encouraged to apply also to the program director and may be admitted based on an interview with the faculty director and available space. The application deadline is May 1, 2016. However, it is expected that this program will fill to capacity, so students should apply early to assure their place.
