Program Description

*** APPLICATION DEADLINE EXTENDED UNTIL SEPTEMBER 30, 2018 ****

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

The Dynamics of Migration Global Seminar is designed to introduce students at the undergraduate and graduate level to community-based problem solving in a Latin American context. Students will spend two weeks in Cuenca, a colonial Spanish city of 400,000 people nestled high in the Andes mountains and enjoying spring-like temperatures year round, as well as few days in Guayaquil, a port-city. During this experience students will study basic Spanish appropriate for helping professionals and visit community-based organizations throughout Cuenca and Guayaquil, Ecuador. Cultural sensitivity is also enhanced by a home stay with an Ecuadorian family.

CLASSES:

Students will earn 4 credits at the undergraduate or 3 credits at the graduate level. Assignments and learning outcomes are different at the undergraduate and graduate levels but the course content is parallel. Both courses focus on local community-based solutions to pervasive social problems in two Latin American cities. Students will visit community based organizations, which may include a shelter for women experiencing intimate partner violence, a day center for homeless teenagers, an orphanage, a human rights organization, a facility which provides care for older people, among others. Additional activities include excursions to local attractions, a stay with an Ecuadorian host family, a service project and other cultural experiences.

SOWK 499: Special Topics in Social Work. Prerequisite: SOWK 200 or Permission of Instructor.

SOWK 599: Special Topics in Social Work. Admission to the SOWK graduate program

HOST INSTITUTION:

Founded in 1992, in recognition of the 500th anniversary of the meeting of the Old and New Worlds, the Centers for Interamerican Studies (CEDEI) is a not-for-profit institution of higher learning, dedicated to the study of American languages and cultures. It is accredited by the Ministry of Education of Ecuador and co-sponsors programs with several colleges and universities in the United States, including Salisbury University.

EXCURSIONS:

The Dynamics of Migration Global Seminar will begin with an overnight stay in Ecuador's largest city, Guayaquil. Students will then wind their way by bus through the magnificent Andes on their way to the Valley of Paute. Once in Cuenca students will take field trips to sites in the region. Possible excursion include a visit to the indigenous tribal community of Saraguro, where students will learn about native spirituality and wellness, El Cajas national park, a breathtaking natural landscape at over 10,000 feet above sea level, dotted with lakes that provide clean water supply to the Cuencan valley, and the Cloud Forest.

HOUSING:

During the program students will stay in hotels during the first night and last two nights. In between, they will be hosted by Ecuadorian families. This group of families has been housing SU students during Jan term since 1995. Most of the families have a member who speaks some English. Living with a host family provides students with a rich cultural experience, as well as providing an inside perspective on Ecuadorian customs, culture, and values in the context of professional middle and upper class Ecuadorian urban families.

COSTS:

Tuition and fees for the 2019 Ecuador: Push, Pull: The Dynamics of Migration From Ecuador program are estimated to be $3600. A final cost will be determined in fall 2019. The price will include all tuition, round-trip airfare, room and board in Cuenca, in-country travel and lodging during the lengthy excursions, and extensive travel assistance provided by the Centro de Estudios Interamericanos.

APPLYING:
The application deadline is May 15, 2018. However, it is expected that this program will fill to capacity, so students should apply early to assure their place.
