Program Description

***** Application Deadline - September 30, 2016 ******

Join the Photography program as we travel to the lands of Kings and Queens, Hogwarts and Wizards, Hunchbacks and the Phantom. The cities of London and Paris serve as your 3-week, 4-credit classroom to explore England and France through the lens of photography. Tentative dates are January 1-23, 2017.

The Global Seminar is led by a faculty member with years of experience in photography particularly in the context of London and Paris. The program is open to all students interested in the history and the art of photography and these two most iconic European capitals.

CLASSES:

Students earn 4 credits for one of two classes:

ART 129: Introduction to Digital Photography (4 credits) - Students focus on developing their photographic skills and understanding of the visual arts. This General Education course is designed for students from all majors. Students will explore the sights of London and Paris while completing photographic assignments, visiting the birthplaces of Photography and learning skills to make their travel images more than vacation pictures. The course is a 4-credit general education course fulfilling the humanities component. There is no pre-requisite and students from all disciplines are encouraged to enroll.

ART 399: International Field Studies - Photography: Cultural Heritage in Travel Photography (4 credits) - Students are introduced to the birthplaces of photography and cultural hotbeds of contemporary photography. Students will be viewing historic and contemporary images of museums and galleries and relating them to their personal work through a series of visual and written assignments. Participants will be encouraged to explore new ways of looking at photographs and the development of critical thinking and language. There is no pre-requisite and advanced Art students are encouraged to enroll.

ACADEMIC SUPPLIES:

Students are expected to supply their own digital cameras, a laptop computer able to run Lightroom version 4 or higher with a minimum of 60GB of storage space, Lightroom version 4 or higher, 2- 16GB or larger flash drives and connections to download digital files (card reader or corded camera connection). They should anticipate bringing a minimum of 4 memory cards of 2GB each and a battery charger. An external portable hard drive is optional.

EXCURSIONS:

Students are based in London for two weeks and Paris for one week. Additional day trips may include the world-famous stone circle in Avebury, England and Versailles, France. Planned excursions within the capitals include the famous London Eye, St. Paul's Cathedral, and the Tower of London on the British side, and a museum pass with access to the world-famous Louvre museum in the City of Lights. In addition all students receive a travel pass that provides free transportation on the world-famous London Tube underground system to sites throughout London, and a Metro pass for the same ease of transportation throughout Paris.

COSTS:

Program fees are estimated to be $4100. A final cost will be determined in fall 2016. The cost includes all tuition and fees, international airfare, housing, travel cards and Metro pass for transportation around London and Paris, transportation between London and Paris, airport transfers, a wealth of activities within each of the capital cities, and significant on-site support from photography professor Jeanne Anderton.
