Program Description

The School of Social Work is offering students the opportunity to learn about social work services and Maori Culture in New Zealand! We are working with social service agencies, Waikato University, Te Wananga o Aotearoa (A Maori Bi-cultural MSW program), the Ministry for Children, and more to offer an exciting two weeks trip to Hamilton, New Zealand and nearby towns.

You will learn about the Maori people, culture, and language, and learn about social services in a country with socialized medical and mental health services.

DATES:
The departure date is expected to be July 29, 2019 with a return date of to August 12, 2019. These dates may change slightly but will be finalized by April 2019.

CLASS:
SOWK 499.599 (4 credits): Global Seminar on Social Services and Maori Studies in New Zealand. The course is open to undergraduate and graduate students from any major. Course work will begin prior to departure to assure that students are well-prepared for their international experiences.

EXCURSIONS:
Travel will occur on the North Island of New Zealand where we will visit the towns of Hamilton, Rotorua, and Tauranga. There will be some excursions to see the famous glow worms and Maori cultural sites.

HOUSING:
Students will have the opportunity to stay in several different locations including homestays with a New Zealand family, hostels, hotels, and a Marae (Maori Spiritual home).

COST:
The estimated cost for the program is $4500. Final costs will be determined by March of 2019. The price includes round-trip airfare, housing, meals, transportation and some admission tickets.

Admission is limited. Students will be admitted on a rolling basis until the program is full. The application deadline is April 5, 2019.
